Oil Boiler Essentials

Oil boilers provide an acceptable alternative economically and environmentally to natural gas or electricity. Natural gas may not be available in all areas and despite recent rises in the cost of oil the price per unit of energy produced still compares very favourably with that of electricity. These days oil boilers are extremely energy efficient, often in excess of 97%.

Oil boilers require an oil storage tank of some kind to be installed outside your property and a number of oil and fuel storage regulations exist for the protection of your property and the environment.

What Type of boiler

As with gas boilers, the highest rated boilers will offer the greatest efficiency, and there are now over 100 "A" rated models on the market. It has been mandatory since April 2007 to install condensing oil boilers to comply with Building Regulations. OFTEC (The Oil Firing Technical Association) are the primary body in the UK for promoting excellence in this industry and operate a Registered Technician Scheme.

Where possible always seek advice from an OFTEC registered installer before purchasing an oil fired boiler. This also applies to buying a replacement oil boiler; because modern boilers are a lot more efficient than older models, it may be false economy to replace the old boiler with one of the same heat output. You may find a lower output model will suffice.

Oil boilers are available with both balanced flues (where the air for combustion is drawn in through a pipe concentric with the extract flue) and with open flues, where the air for combustion is drawn from the room in which the boiler is sited. Although Building Regulations permit both types of boiler to be located in domestic garages, it is recommended that only balanced flue boilers are used in those areas, due to the risk of fumes from a motor vehicle being drawn into the burner. Most modern boilers use a pressure jet burner; although some vaporising burner machines are still available on the market, they may only be fitted into a limited number of locations.

Combi Oil Boilers

A combi oil boiler provides heating and hot water directly from the boiler.

A combi (or combination) boiler is an ingenious space-saving idea, and an increasingly popular choice in UK homes. In fact, combis now account for well over half of all the new domestic boilers installed in Britain every year.

A combi boiler is both a high-efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler, combined (hence the name) within one compact unit. Therefore, no separate hot water cylinder is required, offering space saving within the property.

Further benefits of a combi boiler are significant savings on hot water costs and the fact that hot water is delivered through your taps or shower at mains pressure. So you can enjoy powerful showering without the need for a pump. You should always check your mains water pressure to make sure a combi boiler is suitable for your property.

Another benefit is that it can generally save you money on installation time and costs, since no tank in the roof space means less pipe work and a shorter installation time.

Regular Boilers

Regular boilers heat your central heating system directly and produce hot water for your storage cylinder.

If you are replacing an older model of boiler, the chances are that you will have a regular (also known as 'conventional') boiler.

A typical regular boiler system incorporates a boiler, extended controls, a hot water cylinder which is often fed by a cold water storage cistern located in the loft and a feed and expansion cistern for the primary central heating which is also located in the loft.

System Boilers

A system boiler heats your central heating system directly and produces hot water for your storage cylinder.

A system boiler, just like a regular (conventional) boiler works on the principle of stored hot water. However, a system boiler differs from a regular boiler in some important respects.

Firstly, many of the major individual components of the heating and hot water system are built into a system boiler, such as the circulation pump, diverted valve and expansion vessel, which means that installation is quicker, neater, easier and more efficient.

Secondly, the hot water is pumped from the system boiler through the heating system to the radiators and hot water cylinder, resulting in a fast response and more economical running costs. The system boiler removes the need for a feed and expansion cistern.

How to Rebuild Hydraulic Cylinder

This article is all about, how to rebuild hydraulic cylinders? Hydraulic cylinder repair is an essential skill that must be grasped by people who regularly use hydraulic systems. This article is a tutorial on hydraulic cylinder repair and it deals with all the major problems with hydraulic cylinders, like hydraulic cylinder mechanical seal damage. Read on, to get an idea about how to rebuild hydraulic cylinder?

Hydraulic systems are widely used in agriculture, construction and manufacturing industry. Bulldozers, cranes, tractors, loaders, elevators and all such heavy equipment machines use hydraulics. Hydraulic hybrid vehicles are some of the newest developments in hydraulic technology. Hydraulics is an applied science which applies the mechanical properties of fluids to build hydraulic systems that can perform heavy duty mechanical jobs with precision. The hydraulic systems offer power with precise control and versatility . At the core of every hydraulic system is the hydraulic cylinder. It is the central component on which all hydraulic systems are dependent. Therefore, one must learn how to rebuild hydraulic cylinder, as it saves money and valuable time. Knowing hydraulic cylinder repair is a skill worth having under your belt because its always good to know your tools of trade, inside out. Before we go into hydraulic cylinder repair, let us briefly understand the construction and working of a hydraulic cylinder.

Construction and Working of a Hydraulic Cylinder

Any hydraulic system is made of two parts; the hydraulic pump that generates the pressure and the hydraulic cylinder that delivers the mechanical action in response to pressure. The hydraulic cylinder is a cylindrical barrel fitted with a piston which fluidly moves back and forth. The cylinder barrel is of course sealed from both ends.

The piston divides the barrel body into two parts; the rod end which is the side from where piston enters the barrel body and the other side which is capped called the cap end. The piston is driven back and forth by the hydraulic fluid, which is mostly oil, introduced by the hydraulic pump. The piston has sliding rings and seals which prevent the leakage of fluid from one part of the piston compartment to the other part. The piston is connected with appropriate mounting arrangement. It conveys piston motion to appropriate moving part of the machine which carries the load.

The idea behind every hydraulic system working is simple. The pressure applied at one point is conveyed to other point by the use of an incompressible fluid which is usually oil. So when the pump pushes oil into the piston chamber, from the cap side, the piston is lifted up. When oil is sucked back by the hydraulic pump from the chamber, the piston gets pushed down. This is how a hydraulic system works by conveying force through an incompressible fluid. By using pistons of different surface areas, force multiplication can be achieved. A heavier load can be lifted up by relatively lesser force, using this principle!

Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Now that we know, how a hydraulic cylinder works, we can delve into reasons for why it falls into disrepair condition. Here are some common problems that can break a hydraulic cylinder or cause its malfunctioning. I will outline the possible solutions that can help you rebuild or repair your hydraulic cylinder. Read instruction manuals for the machine supplied by the manufacturers carefully, before going ahead.

Problem 1: Hydraulic cylinder is cracked or piston rod is bent!

Solution: If on observation, you see the cylinder rod is bent or the cylinder barrel is cracked, there is pretty much nothing you can do. Its time to replace the cylinder. Forging a new barell or straightening the piston rod is beyond your capacity. So if this is the case, repairing the hydraulic cylinder is not possible.

Problem 2: The hydraulic cylinder seal is broken!

Solution: If the shaft seal is broken, it can be replaced. However, an opening of the entire cylinder assembly is necessary. Let us see how we can go about it. Obtain a diagram of the hydraulic cylinder if possible as it will help you in reassembly. These diagrams can be had from the equipment manufacturers and you can also carry a printout. You can order a standard repair kit for your hydraulic cylinder which is supplied by the manufacturing company. It includes spare cylinders, spare seals and other spare parts according to the number and type of cylinders in your machine.

The assembly of the cylinder varies with machine type. Locate the seal position first. Mostly, you will find it around the shaft on one end. The shaft entry end can be accessed by unscrewing the lid from that side. Then loosen the pipes that transmit the hydraulic fluid into the chambers which will release pressure. This will enable you to remove the shaft which otherwise cannot be removed due to hydraulic pressure. Handle the shaft carefully and take care that you do not scratch it. Detach the piston from the shaft and replace the seal with the spare one from the repair kit. Make sure that the seal is aligned rightly. Oil all parts after fitting and reassemble everything in exactly reverse order.

Problem 3: Piston Rings are damaged!

Solution:If the piston rings are damaged, then they can be replaced too, by the same disassembling procedure, as for the above problem. The Piston rings need to be removed and replaced very carefully. Oil the rings and cylinder assembly before putting back everything together.

If you have a multiple cylinder arrangement, things are more complicated. It is better to consult a qualified technician before going ahead. I hope this article has given you an idea about how to rebuild hydraulic cylinder with ease. Always remember one rule while you are solving mechanical seal problems, do not proceed without a reason to take a particular action. Also, study the assembly and causative framework of the machine before going for repair. Hydraulic cylinder repair can be a good learning experience for anyone who loves machine design.

trying to oil prime a chevy small block with a drill , the two front cylinders wont prime a little oil comes?

any suggestions on how to get the front two cylinders to prime, a very small amount of oil and an occassional air bubble appears. we ran the drill for 10or 15 minutes , dont think there is anything wrong with the front two cylinders but since they are the farthest from the oil pump thought someone might know a trick to get them to prime, hate to take the engine apart for no reason, or install the engine and damage it. it was rebuilt and driven for a few thousand miles but has been setting for a couple of year on an engine stand . any ideas would be appreciated

First thing i would ask is did u rebuild the old oil pump or get a new oil pump. if not u can check the oil pump to make sure it is working good before putting it in the engine (put oil in clean shallow bowl and make sure the sump is buried in the oil and test it and make sure the outlet goes back into the pan,it should gush like crazy if not replace or rebuild the oil pump) then prime it
