PCV is a short term for Positive Crankcase Ventilation, these are one-way valves that are present in the engine crankcase of a car. It is housed in a system containing an intake breather hose and a valve as parts. The function of the PCV valve is to maintain the emission controls of the engine.
A PCV valve can block, the primary reason for blocked PCV valves is when the engine does not have oil changes with intervals which causes sludge. Sludge is known as the oil that is at a place for a very long time and thus changes to a solid material. It also happens to engines that are mostly used for short trips. Whenever this happens, the emission controls of the car will not operate normally. Power loss, gas mileages loss, slow car acceleration, poor idling and various other troubles are symptoms of a spoiled PCV valve.
Replacing a PCV valve is not easy but it's also not complicated. This task is trouble-free to do when the weather is sunny and the engine is hot. Following are the steps for replacing a PCV Valve. Follow the directions.
Directions
Step 1:
Before the task is started, the shape of a PCV and its location must be known. The valve is located in the crankcase as mentioned earlier. The PCV looks like a small plug which is made of plastic and is placed on the upper half of the engine.
Step 2:
Once you have located the PCV, any obstructions in the way should be removed. This will help to prevent the other parts from getting damaged. In addition, working on the valve will be easier without anything blocking the way.
Step 3:
In the next step, the hoses that are connected to the valve have to be loosened. For doing this, the angled nose pliers should be used. Start by loosening the upper hose. The hose must not be gripped in a very tight manner because the metal stump can get damaged.
Step 4:
Once the upper hose is disconnected, use the nose pliers and grip the PCV valve firmly and pull it out.
Step 5:
For completely detaching the valve, the remaining upper hose has to be detached. The hole left by detaching it is the lower hose. This area has to be cleaned for ensuring that the replacement valve will be free of blockages. Ensure that there are no penetrates of dirt present in the hose.
Step 6:
Finally, the new PCV valve is ready to be installed now. It is installed in the gapping hole. First, the part for the upper hose has to be placed. This will be fairly easy as compared to when the part was being removed.
Step 7:
Remember to place the obstructions back as stated before. They must not be over-screwed, this will make them work efficiently.
This simple DIY method can save you some money.

How To Change An Air Filter
"Changing the air filter should be part of any tune‐up. You should change your air filter based on the air filter manufactures recommended interval. If you don't know the manufacturers recommendation then you are safe in most cases changing it every 15,000 miles or once a year. If you live in an especially dusty or dirty area, you may need to change it more often."
If you want to know how to change an air filter you've come to the right place. To see if your air filter needs to be replaced, shine a flashlight from the inside out. If you can't see any light or very little light, it needs to be replaced. Change the breather filter and check the PCV at the same time. On most cars, this is a fairly simple procedure.
Things you'll need from your garage or your local parts store:
- Flat‐Head or Phillips screwdrivers
- Adjustable or open‐end wrench
- Pliers
- New air filter
- New breather filter (if so equipped)
STEP 1
Pop the hood and find the air filter housing. It will be either square (on fuel injected engines) or round (on older carbureted engines) and about 12 in. (30 cm.) in diameter. On older vehicles, it will be in a large round housing on the top of the engine. On newer vehicles, it will be on the end of the large black intake hose opposite the engine mounted on one of the fender wells.
STEP 2
Use a screwdriver to remove the screws or clamps that hold on the top of the housing. If you have an older vehicle with the round air filter housing, remove the wing nut holding the air filter cover. There maybe 3 or 4 clips holding the air filter cover, undo these too.
STEP 3
Take out the old air filter and clean any dirt and debris from the housing with a clean rag. Be careful that no dirt or debris falls into the carburetor. Remove the breather filter.
STEP 4
Install the new air and breather filters. Replace the air cleaner top. Reinstall attaching hardware and air intake hose (if applicable).
If you have need of further assistance contact your local Mobile Oil Change Service technician.
Important Tip:
When the air filter is out, you should replace the PCV filter as well. It should only take 5 minutes.

98' Integra GS-R PCV?
Im running an open breather on my valve cover right now and I've heard it's a bad idea. 2 questions, first, will an open breather have an affect on my emissions test. And second, I want to replace the breather with and Endyn Breather Tank kit. I wanna know what affrect that will have on emissions as well. Any install info for the Endyn kit would also be appreciated.
Well the main purpose of the PCV is to pull out the gases that by-passed the piston rings (blow by). Some emission might check if its working but I don't know of any, If your venting to atmosphere all those gases are not going through the cat so isn't getting cleaned up.
But I thinks whats worse is that if you don't have the breather tube hooked to you intake the gases in your crankcase gets pressurized most of the gases will stay in the crankcase and start pushing against oil seals and you engine will start leaking oil, if its a older engine the seals will most likely be dried out and will make it easier to leak. If its hooked up to your intake when you engine is idling or anytime its in vacuum the blow by will get sucked out of your crankcase and keep your seals from unnecessary pressure
If the Endyn kit hooks up to the intake from the engine and has an oil catch can it will work even better then OEM PCV systems, Many OEM PCV's cant filter out the oil that leaks past and into the intake. So hook your breather tube back up or connect your Endyn system. Hope this helps good luck.
