You are standing on the deck of your boat in the middle of the vast ocean. This is an entirely new experience to you. The ocean has always been that blue area on the map, never a reality. Now you are in command and racing towards the horizon. All of a sudden the boat hits a swell and you fall into the water. There is no one around and you are faced with two decisions either you sink or you swim. This is similar to most leadership situations that you face. You are in new territory that you may have only seen or heard about before.
In aircraft maintenance there are always new guys coming from another base where they worked on different types of airplanes. These guys all have the potential to be very good mechanics and many have great natural instincts. As with anything new, there is a learning curve. This is the time where you learn the norms of your new role or job. Other experienced mechanics take for granted that they too were once new. They expect everyone to just know what they know. They are very apprehensive to show new people how to do something and expect them to figure it out on their own. In other words, they feel that you need to be thrown off a boat and either you sink or you swim!
People do not know how to be on a team and that their role changes as the team changes. Each new member means that there are new dynamics and you may now be the team leader. The scenario that I just shared with you is not isolated only to where I work. The same type of thing happens everywhere. I do not want to see if you sink or swim; I want to give you a powerful tool to guide you. This tool is my leadership continuum and it has five fundamental steps. This tool can be adapted to fit any situation but is best for leading groups.
Those that have difficulty leading only one other person or even just themselves will surely struggle when leading a group of people. There is nothing wrong if you are not ready to move up, you still may need to practice being a self-leader and one-on-one leaders some more. Make sure that you do not hold yourself back because you are comfortable and are happy right where you are. We all have the ability to be great leaders, what some lack is the desire. These following steps are for those that are ready for new challenges.
Congratulations! If you are still reading that means that you gave yourself the kick in the butt that you needed to be challenged and expand your horizons. As you can see each new level builds on the one prior. The rules all stay the same as you move up to the next level it is just that now you get to learn some new ones. You will always be a good one-on-one leader in fact those that become great team leaders are even better at working with others one-on-one.
There are many new challenges when dealing with groups and this tool help you to conquer them. Leadership is not something that is done once then there is no need for it after that, it is a continuous circle. This leadership continuum concept is designed for any level of group leadership and by applying these principles you can lead a group of any size. This concept is made up of five steps.
They are:
(1) getting to know your team;
(2) establishing the standards;
(3) communicate the goals and responsibilities;
(4) supervise;
(5) reflect and set new goals.
Here is an easy outline format of the 5 essential steps of leadership to keep you on track.
Get to know your team
-Learn their strengths and weaknesses
--Use their strengths to develop another's weakness
-Learn their personalities as well
--Everyone learns differently so seek the best method for the individual
Establish your standards
-Allow them to know what happens when they are wrong
-Reward them for exceptional behavior
--Don't get in habit of rewarding the bare minimum, then they will not strive to do better
and further develop their skills
Communicate responsibilities
-Listen carefully to all requirements
--Who, What, When, Where, and Why?
-Clearly communicate each task
--Use the method that will best get the point across to the responsible individual
--Make sure they understand what needs to be done
--Make their role in the task clearly known
---This is where the system of accountability comes in
Supervise
-Make sure the right person is doing the right job
-Implement your plan "B" if you need to
-Guide each individual in the right direction
--Don't do the job for them
Get new task and set new goals
-Take the initiative to get something else done
-Use your teams experience to the best that you can.

The Topper System for Picking Winners at the Horse Races, a Free System for Fun
I was just a kid when I started going to the horse track, in fact, some of my earliest memories are of watching the legs of the horses go pounding by through the rails of the old Narragansett Park. That track and many of the horsemen I met back then are long gone, but the memories linger. One horseman who was particularly memorable was a tall red haired gent who always wore a fedora. Back then, many men wore hats, in fact, it was rare to see a man not wearing a hat in public. Red, as he was called, not only wore a stylish hat, but also always wore a suit and looked like the picture of success.
He was good at picking winners and many other handicappers would consult with him before they made their bets. It was common knowledge that he used a system called, "The Topper," but no one knew exactly how it worked or could pry that information out of him.
Each day, as he left the track, he would buy two racing programs for the next day's races. That was about the only expense he ever incurred at the track because many people insisted on buying him a beer or a sandwich in order to get a tip on the upcoming race. Sometimes Red didn't have to spend a dime all day because the same people he'd helped out with the results of his Topper system, would often buy him a ticket on the horse it picked.
When he arrived at the track with one of those racing programs in hand, he very rarely had to pay his own way in because someone else who was walking through the gate at the same time would usually insist on paying his way in. Being a perfect gentleman, Red would usually reward their kindness with a tip on one of the races.
Oftentimes, you could hear voices in the crowd saying, "The Topper system picks these two as the top horses, but it is so close between them, it is hard to tell which is best, so Red says go by the odds."
While Red's Topper horse racing system was pretty good, it seemed to often pick two horses that were very closely matched. Red would often caution that since those two were so closely matched they might burn each other out in a furious battle and one of the other contenders would win. It was amazing how often Red was right, either one of the top two horses his system picked would win, or that other horse would take advantage of those two being so closely matched and steal the race at the finish.
Red was known to have his losing streaks, like any of the other players, but he also got hot at times and seemed like he was almost clairvoyant. When Red was losing, the other players cursed bad luck, and when he was winning, there were lots of smiles in the payoff line and lots of backslapping, too.
It wasn't until many years later that I finally cracked the code of the Topper system. I was looking through a magazine and saw a picture of a well dressed man in a fedora. The caption under the ad read, "Look like Mr. Success in a Topper."
It was then that the whole mystery clicked. I thought of the two programs Red always bought and wondered why he only returned the next day with one. Here is what I figured out, each day Red bought an extra program that he took home. He cut or ripped out the top three or four horses, according to the morning line odds, for each race. For each race he would place the scraps of paper with the names of the top four horses in his fedora and then pull two out. They became his top horses. Of course, since they were in the top four of the morning line, they really did have a good chance of winning.
He would then circle their names in his other program, the one he was going to take to the track the next day. By keeping his selections among the top three or four horses in the morning line, Red managed to have a high win rate or to at least have a horse that ran very close. By saying that it was between two horses, Red managed to cover a lot of ground.
If you want to see how successful the Topper system is, try it yourself, just for fun of course. You'll soon find that you have a few winners everyday and though you may not make a profit from it, it will have its good days, just like Red.

how many calories and fat are in the cappuccino at convenient stores?
I don't like coffee but love the sweet cappuccinos at gas stations like Circle K and Race Track anyone know the calories and fat?
It is really going to depend. If it doesn't have a label, you are entitled by law to ask for the nutrition information. Just ask whoever gives it to you or the sales clerk what they make it with (type of milk, mix, etc.)
