When you think of Albuquerque, New Mexico, you do not first think of racing, but the New Mexico city has a racing fan base that is passionate about their favorite sport. The Southwest Motorsport Road Racing Association is the place to get your racing excitement. Located just 14 miles west of Albuquerque the facility was formed in 1999, to give car enthusiast a venue to pursue their passion. Their home track is the Sandia Speedway. The facility is used for test days, autocross, Solo, drifting and private testing.

The Speedway houses three tracks, two oval s, one 1/2 mile and one 1/4 mile and a 1.7 mile road course. Each track has several events throughout the year beginning in January. The road course holds over 40 road course events with a wide range of makes and models. Clubs from all over NM come to the Sandia Track because of its flexibility and variety of tracks. Everything is state of the art, from the family oriented spectator building to the hospitality area and a kid friendly playground area, Southwest Motorsports has it all.

Clubs and races include; Legends Cars, SMRI Track Day, Porsche Club Autocross, Soren Loree, the NM Drifters Club, ASA Indy Cars, Nissan Infiniti, SCCA Events, PJ's Triumph Day, Corvette Club and NASA, Rio Grande Sports Club, Sandia Motorcycle Racing. BMW's, Miata's, Ferrari's and more call this track their home. There are special events throughout the season with plenty of opportunities for car enthusiasts to get out and enjoy their hobby and develop their skill.

The two oval tracks host weekly Saturday night races featuring Late Models, Super Trucks, Modifieds, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Factory 4's, VW Beetles, Mini-Sprints, Legends and Powder Puff. There is one name that is synonymous with racing and that name is Unser. Fans all over the world know and love Al Unser, one of racing's most successful drivers and the Unser Museum in NW Los Ranchos in Albuquerque is family owned and operated and its exhibits reflect the love of cars and racing that runs deep in the hearts of Unser's for generations.

Exhibits at the museum are ever changing, some remain permanently on display, and others rotate in and out. The museum is divided into sections with each displaying a different era of history. Area 6 is the welcome center and main entrance into the museum. Area 1 is "Pikes' Peak" and displays are geared to the Unser family history and the early days of Unser racing. Area 2 is the "Unser Dynasty" and displays address the success the family has in racing and the excitement of Indy Racing. Area 3, "Jerry's Garage", tells the story of the hard work and dedication with a garage display and movie area. Area 4, "Special Features" looks at friends and racing figures that have impacted the Unser family. Area 5 displays "Technologies", Area 7 is the "Winner's Circle" with Unser highlights and memorabilia Admission to the museum is $7.00 for adults with discounts for seniors and children.

Horses Entered in a Race for Main Track Only Indicate Trainer Intent

Sooner or later, when you are handicapping horse races and trying to make money betting on the horses, you realize that you spend a lot of your time handicapping the people, not just the horses. The truth of the matter is that the people, that is the jockey, trainer, and owner, have as much to do with the horse winning as the horse itself. For instance, if the trainer decides, for whatever reason, that the horse isn't ready to win and shouldn't be pushed too hard in the race, he or she may tell the rider to just take it easy and give it some exercise.

While the owner may be aware of that fact and perhaps some of the people on the backstretch, the betting public is unaware of it and may even make the horse the favorite. So figuring out trainer intent becomes a very big part of handicapping a race if you really are serious about winning money. You have several choices in this matter of reading trainer's minds.

First of all, you can learn as much as you can about training race horses so you will understand why a trainer is doing what he or she is doing. Secondly, you can learn to track smart money. While the smart money doesn't always win, it wins often enough to stay ahead in a very difficult game. That is why it really is smart money.

There are, however, occasions when a trainer's intentions are not only obvious, but can point out a good bet. The place to look for some of these obvious calls is in turf races. When you see a horse entered in a turf race and the words, "Main Track Only, of MTO," are beside the horse's name, that means the owner has entered the runner only if the race is taken off the turf and run on dirt.

The trainer knows that the horse is only likely to win or be competitive if it runs on the dirt. If all the conditioner wanted to do was to exercise the horse to get it in shape, as many trainers do, he or she wouldn't mind running it over the grass. But when you see that a horse is entered in a turf race but only to be run over the main track, it is a strong indication that the trainer will tell the rider to try for the win if given the chance. It isn't a guarantee of a win, there is no such thing in horseracing, but it does mean that if you bet on the horse, at least you know that the rider will be trying to get it into the winner's circle and that is a big part of the handicapping puzzle.

How do you get started racing cars (drag or circle track) in Houston, TX?

My fiance REALLY wants to get started racing cars (circle track or drag). How does one go about starting this? Do any of you race cars? How did you get started? ANY information would be greatly appreciated. Best answer gets 5 points!!! (We are in the NW Houston area).

All he has to do is figure out what type of racing he wants to do then set up a program to get started. By a program I mean he needs a car, tools and equipment, a trailer , supplies and a place to work on it. If he,s going to go after sponsors to help he will have to do a lot of leg work making calls and meeting and even a resume that potential sponsors can look at. Mine is like a mini movie showing my shop, all my equipment , the car ( even some action shots ) and my trailer and tow rig. It's burned on to a DVD which goes along with a written proposal of what types of things i'd be willing to do ( like paint schemes, personal appearances, etc...) and a cost breakdown of how much you expect to spend for your program for a year. The more info they have the better.
Also once he decides what type of racing he wants to do he need to check for local tracks and contact them for the rules that apply to whatever he chooses. I'll give you a couple of sites that can help him find cars and equipment and one to find tracks.
