You've probably seen photos of some really modified BMWs... custom paint, big wheels, lowered suspensions, maybe even superchargers or widebody kits. While these cars are awesome to drool over, the majority of BMW owners don't desire to modify their cars to this level. With that said, this doesn't mean that you can't still improve and enhance your BMW!

In the last few years, a movement or modding philosophy has come to prominence called "OEM+" or "OEM Plus." People who embody this style generally feel that the car is very good or near perfect from the factory, but that you can improve it in subtle ways, hence the "Plus." Examples of this range from using OEM BMW Performance Parts or parts from the ///M Series on your non-M car, to choosing small, subtle aftermarket parts.

OEM+ is a great option for people with families or tough road conditions, or people who just don't want to go overboard. There are a lot of great options out there to enhance your BMW, and this article will outline some of them for you.

A really big BMW Enhancement is to change the kidney grills or side gills. You can go with Carbon Fiber, but if you're trying to go subtle, you probably will opt for a Matte Black or Painted version, the latter of which will match your car's paint and make the car more aggressive by removing the chrome. Other great exterior parts include painted bumper reflectors to get rid of the orange, or Solaris chrome-plated bulbs to remove any "egg yolk" amber from inside the clear tail lights or turn signals.

As far as interior parts, you can go with some new floor mats, change the shifter and eBrake handle (maybe go to a BMW one or something tasteful made of aluminum), or opt for a BMW Performance Steering Wheel.

Contrary to popular belief, OEM+ cars can still upgrade wheels, as there are a lot of options that maintain the factory look. One company I suggest is Velocity Motoring, as they have some styles that match BMW's silver color, and are really subtle. Their CSL wheel is inspired by a BMW OEM design, so you can't go wrong. Alternatively, you can always get BMW Performance Wheels, but those are a little more expensive and generally don't have a great range of sizes and offsets.

You may also be surprised to hear that OEM+ can include performance parts. Again, BMW's own Performance division offers cold air intakes and exhausts for some of the latest cars. Although these upgrades cost more and do not make the same power gains as other parts from aFe Power, REMUS, or any other popular aftermarket company, they do maintain the OEM look, feel, and sound, and are much more conservative, if that's your style.

OEM vs. After Market Parts

For a passive buyer, these things are but ordinary terms used in the automotive market but for someone meticulous and who wants the best for his auto, these things matter considerably. Deciding which among these to purchase is just like deciding what car to buy.

O.E.M. stands for Original Equipment Manufactured. This means that OEM Ford parts are manufactured by Ford itself, Chevrolet parts are manufactured by Chevrolet, Toyota parts by Toyota, BMW parts by BMW and so on. The terms O.E.S. and OE are also used; these mean Original Equipment Supplied and Original Equipment, respectively. While in many cases, OEM and OES mean the same, OE is more general referring to any part that came as original equipment on the car. Some of OE car parts and components are not actually made by the car manufacturer but are purchased and assembled by the automakers to create a vehicle.

Those referred to as "aftermarket auto parts" are not made by the original car manufacturer; furthermore, they are bought and added to the vehicle only at the dealership or after the vehicle left the dealership. In terms of design and function, aftermarket products are almost the same as the stock auto parts since they are primarily used to replace a damaged original part so that the vehicle can continue to run. If you need replacement parts for your car, however, you can either buy O.E.M. or aftermarket auto parts. There are numerous sources of aftermarket auto parts. Some cars, especially the base models are not completely equipped so users just add aftermarket parts later on. Technical parts question For a 1986 Chevy caprice 305 4 bbl?

Ok heres my question , i want to replace the OEM air cleaner assembly on my chevy with thoses chrome all around opened ones .. you know the ones im talking about.( edleborck, mr gasket , K&N ect..)

I have only a sligt problem , there are 2 hoses that part from the air cleaner assembly . One is the pcv , breather filter i know about this one no problem .

But there's this other one, its a small blue ac delco sensor that sit on the top rim inside the air cleaner, about one inch long and it is opened where you can see 2 small metal flaps in it and its linked with a vacum hose to the carburator or close to it.

Ive searched everywere and cant find what it is.

I wanna know what it is cuz i wanna know if i got to keep it when i change the hole air cleanner to put my new chrome one in will it change something if i discard it, or do i have to keep it.

I had to go and get one of my older books to get your answer. This is from a 1992 Emission Control Application Guide that covers your model year. Requirements are PCV, TAC, EVAP, TWC, FR, BP/EGR, SPK, AIS, O2, CEC, EFE. The one that is for TAC, represents thermostatic air cleaner and the switch that you make mention of is the vacuum control switch for the TAC. You air cleaner has a heat riser pipe that comes from the exhaust manifold to the air cleaner. This provides warm air for cold morning starts and cold weather conditions. The purpose is to prevent icing of the venturi in the carburetor. Hope this helps. It is also an emissions requirement for smog testing.
