Question - My 2002 325i seems to burn about 2-3 quarts of oil between oil changes. I change my oil between 5-6k miles and I am worried about how much oil it is consuming. What could this be?
Answer - Your car does burn a small amount of oil between oil changes. But the amount your car is using up is excessive. It sounds like you have a clogged crankcase ventilation valve or hose. This is a common failure point on the M52 and M54 motors. Most of the time the reason these do get clogged up is due to the oil change intervals BMW recommend which can give the valve a quicker build up then normal. The way to fix this issue is to change the valve and the hoses too. The hoses ten to get dry and crack so it's good to do all of them at the same time.
When doing this repair here are some items to change while your there.
Intake Manifold Gaskets
Fuel Injector seals (top and bottom)
Oil Separator Valve
Oil dipstick o-ring
All the hoses connected to the Valve
BMW TECH TIPS!
Even if the BMW dealer says it's a "Life Time Fluid" please change it. Mainly your transmission oil and differential oils. Also when doing a Auto transmission, change your filter.
Even when the BMW dealer says to go 15k miles between oil changes. Change it between 5-8k even if it is synthetic oil it isn't good for the engine to wait that long.

I ordered Mityvac 7400 7.3 liters of fluid evacuator 21st February this year. It was ordered as a gift and because the container is in good condition with no signs of injury, I made a mistake and gift packaging for inspection. It was purchased in advance of the occasion, which I bought. This gift was opened this weekend at my mother-in-laws trip from Miami. Mityvac Vacuum was actually damaged in shipping and now when I try to return, Amazon is the answer to return window has expired.
Construction equipment is in my opinion wrong. The outer coat is hard, brittle plastic. Box came was too weak to protect them during transport. I pointed out a sea container was no sign of damage. It is clear that this case has a small bump in the course of treatment and the bus is so fragile that a bump caused the break. I doubt that I have no way to fix suggests that the vacuum, let alone the problem of preventing the transmission of oil or oil leaking from the bus during its use can be found.
I am very disappointed in the product and the Amazon return policy for this item. I certainly never buy one.

Check your car's oil filter first
The Mityvac works acceptably. You connect 2 hoses to the main canister, slide the hose tip down the the dipstick hole, pump and let the oil drain up and out into the canister, instead of crawling under the car. Capacity was more than sufficient. It may not get out ~all~ the oil, but it gets close to 90% (slightly over 4 liters from an engine with 4.5 liters of oil.)I haven't tried to clean it yet. The problem (mine, not blaming Mityvac) is that my car has a down facing oil filter. This means even if I pump out the oil first, I'd still have to deal with a minor amount of spilled oil from the engine after unscrewing the oil filter. This is what I wanted to avoid in the first place. If your oil filter faces upward, you can let it sit for long enough that all the oil drains out of the oil filter and back down into the engine. This pump can't remove ALL the oil, so I still have to crawl under the car and deal with a small amount of oil flowing out the drain hole. Since I have to get under the car anyway, and there will still be ~some~ oil leaking, this isn't something I recommend. If you can reach your filter from the top of the car, it should work for you, both in not having to get under the car and not dripping oil.

I had no serious difficulties with the first use of this device -nothing was loose as suggested by other reviews and it functioned as advertised.............

I bought this MityVac from Amazon and only used it once so far to do the oil change on my 2001 BMW 325i. For anyone with the same car, you will be happy to know that this worked like a charm. Just warm up your engine a bit before using it, not hot just warm. Also, you might consider loosening your oil filter to allow oil to drain down while using the MityVac. I only loosened the oil cap on the engine and it still worked fine. A couple observations: I took a flashlight and looked very closely at the top of the MityVac to see if there were cracks around the screws. I'm sorry, but those indents are NOT cracks, but are molded into the plastic. They are oddly shaped, but I do not see cracks and cannot get even a thin sheet of newspaper to stick in them. I subtract one star for: slight crack damage on the outside ribs of the white container, cheap epoxy used as a seal on many critical plastic parts, rubber stopper for main tube easily falls out after it gets oily, and you must take out all the screws to clean out the inside of it after use. Otherwise nice job, and hopefully will last many more oil changes. If not, it's going back.
Pleasant Surprise, Very Easy to Use!
I haven't worked on a car in over 25 years (my old 1982 Monte Carlo). I now have a 25 year old pontoon boat with a pre-1985 Chevy 3.0L 4cyl engine. I was tired of getting ripped off by the local marinas, so I decided to do the work myself. I read the reviews and purchased this item hoping it would be easy to use. Swaying over the water, I popped off a drain plug that is used for access to the oil pan, plugged the tube into the hole (you get 3 different sized tubes to choose from), gave the handle a few pumps and the oil immediately started flowing into the cannister. Since I was doing other things like changing the distributor cap, points, rotor, fuel filter, etc., I was not able to run the engine to warm up the oil, but it didn't matter. The suction was good enough to drain 4 1/2 quarts of oil in less than 15 minutes. I had to give it an extra pump or 2 every few minutes, but there was no effort to get this unit to work, even with the thicker oil. Disposal was easy; however, there is no note in the instructions that the cap to the holding unit is a plug and not screwed in. I also wish they had an adapter for my drain cap, which uses a garden hose type threaded cap. Considering an oil change at the local marina is probably $40 or more, this has pretty much paid for itself with the first use. Well worth the money!

leaking transmission fluid in 2002 Chevy Malibu?
Can anyone tell me how to check the transmission fluid in the model, and how to add fluid? The users guide says to take it to the shop to check it, and there is no dipstick area. I have heard about a valve behind the engine, but wanted to see if anyone had any more specifics than that. Also, what could cause the tranny fluid to leak? Thanks
It's checked at hot idle by removing a plug on the side of the transmission under the car. You pour a little transmission fluid in the top fill hole until it just starts to leach out of the side plug. But if I were you, I wouldn't bother because you need transmission service anyways at 30,000 miles which you probably never had done to keep your power train warranty in effect. So take it in to the GM dealer's shop and have the transmission service done and you'll be good for another 30,000 miles.
