NFL Tickets – Aaron Rodgers is Top Fantasy QB in the NFL for 2010

In the contemporary NFL that stresses passing over running, quarterbacks have become more valuable than ever for fantasy football managers.  Here is how I see the top five heading into the year.

5.  Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers.  Other options here would definitely be Matt Schaub or Tom Brady, but Rivers has been so consistent he would be tough to pass up here.  Rivers is the only quarterback to have a rating 104 or higher each of the last two seasons, in which he averaged 31 touchdowns and 10 picks.  With the Chargers drafting running back Ryan Mathews in the first round, the Chargers should also improve their running game, which could open up seams down the field for Rivers.  Rivers remains a very solid fantasy option from year to year and may still have his best football ahead of him.

4.  Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts.  In 2009, Manning threw for 4,500 yards for just the second time in his career and tossed 33 touchdowns to boot.  Manning is still an elite player in the league and has plenty left in the tank, but he just doesn't seem to have quite the same upside as some of the other quarterbacks on the list.  This isn't to say that Manning is a bad fantasy choice, though, and he is probably the most reliable pick on the top five.  The downside to drafting Manning is almost zero and he still has a top wide receiver (Reggie Wayne) and a top tight end (Dallas Clark) to throw to.  Manning is going to be a top five fantasy quarterback in 2010 and is probably still the best overall signal caller in the league, though you have other options as a fantasy manager.

3.  Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys.  Nobody has more weapons this year than Tony Romo.  Not many will draft Romo above Peyton Manning, who is the better overall quarterback, but Romo just may have a higher fantasy ceiling this year.  Romo threw 26 TDs and nine picks last year with an underachieving Roy Williams and made a complete unknown, Miles Austin, into a fantasy beast.  The Cowboys drafted talented wideout Dez Bryant in the first round, which seems to be pushing Williams to have a comeback season.  Romo also has one of the top pass-catching tight ends in the game in Jason Witten, giving him targets all over the field.  Barring injury, I expect a career statistical year out of Tony Romo.

2.  Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints.  Brees had an absurd quarterback rating of 109.6 last season, which led all quarterbacks.  His 34 touchdowns and 11 interceptions from 2009 make him a fantasy stud and it was the second consecutive year in which he tossed 30 touchdowns.  With Sean Payton as his offensive coordinator, Brees is in the perfect system to keep him a highly productive quarterback for quite a while, all the while helping the Saints sell plenty of <a href="http://www.stubhub.com/nfl-tickets/">NFL tickets</a>.

1.  Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers.  You can still make the argument that Peyton Manning, Drew Brees or even Tom Brady is actually the best quarterback in the league, but not in terms of fantasy production.  In 2009, Rodgers had his second full season as the Packers' starting quarterback and stepped in for Brett Favre with unbelievable poise.  Rodgers tossed 30 touchdowns against just seven interceptions and also threw for more than 4,400 yards a season ago.  What's most remarkable about this is that he did it with one of the very worst offensive lines in the entire league.  His mobility also cannot be overlooked as Rodgers ran for another 316 yards rushing and added five touchdowns.  Rodgers is already an elite quarterback but could be the one to take the torch from Peyton Manning as the best QB from year to year.  Not many quarterbacks in the league have 40 touchdown potential, but Rodgers certainly does.

Best of the Rest:

Matt Schaub, Tom Brady and Brett Favre are the three other options who still might be able to help you win your fantasy league.  Schaub threw for more than 4,700 yards and 29 touchdowns last season and has one of the best wide receivers in the league to throw to in Andre Johnson.  Brady is still an elite quarterback and could be substantially stronger another year removed from his 2008 knee injury.  If Favre plays, he also is a solid option as he simply continues to produce on the field.
