Cam Bearings Freeze

One of the busiest times of the year for motorcycle and small engine repair shops is early spring. Why? Because people pull their bikes out of storage and the engine runs poorly or does not even start at all. By performing just a few simple tasks before extended storage, you can avoid all of the mechanical pitfalls of spring and have your bike running just as well as when you parked it. Believe it or not, storage maintenance is every bit as important as in-season maintenance. The following steps will make all of the difference when you are ready to ride again.

1. Change the engine oil and oil filter. Change transmission fluids as well. Used oil contains contaminants and acids which are much better out of your bike during extended storage.

2. Address anything that is broken or requiring repair. If there is an item requiring attention such as a broken or cracked part or a leaky fork seal, fix it now while it is fresh in your mind. If you do not have the time or inclination to fix these problems now, at least make a "to do" list and tie it to your handlebars so that nothing is forgotten for next season.

3. Top up the coolant system. If your coolant is not in good condition or is a few years old, simply change with a mixture as recommended by your owner's manual. Avoid expensive freezing damage!

4. Stabilize your fuel. This is very important! Stale fuel forms varnish and sludge deposits that clog injectors, fuel lines and carburetors. Often people wonder why their bike started fine when they put it away and come spring, it will not start. The answer is invariably stale fuel. The preventative process is simple, but be sure to start with fresh fuel. Stabilizer will not improve the performance characteristics of fuel that has already started to degrade. Simply add a good quality stabilizer to your fuel and be sure to run it for a few minutes to make sure that has circulated through your fuel system. Then top up your tank to remove any air pocket where condensation can form. It is also a good idea to add stabilizer to your fuel during riding season. During periods when you are not riding much, fuel can oxidize and degrade. The performance of today's fuels can degrade quite rapidly as it approaches thirty days in the tank or storage container. A small amount of stabilizer can maintain performance and keep your fuel system clean. Your local shop is going to be very busy next spring cleaning the carburetors of those who ignore this advice.

5. Fog your carburetors and cylinders. Condensation can form inside your engine over winter. This can result in rust and corrosion forming on cylinder liners, piston rings and bearings. Long periods of storage can also dry out cylinder walls creating the risk of a "dry start". This common cause of engine damage can easily be avoided with the use of a fogging spray. First remove your air filter and start the engine. Then spray the fogging oil directly into the carburetor(s) until you see significant smoke coming out of the exhaust. Immediately shut down the engine. Then remove the spark plug(s) and spray more fogging oil into the cylinders. Before reinstalling the spark plugs, crank over the engine for a few seconds to properly coat the piston and cylinder walls. Reinstall the spark plug and air cleaner.

6. Drain carburetor(s) if possible. Draining the fuel will eliminate the possibility of varnish and deposit build up. Turn off the fuel petcock.

7. Lube all cables, pivots and the chain. Do not allow rust to form on anything.

8. Preserve your bike's appearance. Wash the bike thoroughly and then polish or wax all painted and chrome surfaces. Apply a protectant or conditioner to all plastic, vinyl and leather components. Spray light penetrating oil on bare metal, black exhaust pipes and black painted engine surfaces.

9. Inflate the tires to highest pressure suggested on the tire sidewall.

10. Remove the battery and store it in a location where it will not freeze. Top up "maintenance-type" batteries with distilled water. Trickle charge the battery every 6 weeks or so at the required amp/hour rating.

By performing these simple tasks, you can sleep well this winter knowing that your bike will be ready to go when you are next spring. Rather than waiting for repairs, you can be out riding.

Self-lubricating, Nonmetallic Bearings Handle Tough Jobs

Self-lubricating bearings make sense when relubrication is difficult or when operating conditions compromise liquid lubricants. Such bearings can also eliminate the need for special lubricants in food-processing equipment.Self-lubricated, nonmetallic Duralon bearings, for instance, use a filament-wound fiberglass epoxy resin matrix with a woven bearing element of Teflon and polyester. The bearings can be made in numerous shapes and inexpensively customized to work in a wide range of conditions, including harsh industrial environments.

For example, pneumatic cylinders fitted with Duralon rod bearings operate a rotary valve actuator on machines that fill "tote tanks" with liquid chemicals including solvents, soaps, oils, vaporous liquids, waxes, and corrosives. The cylinders have successfully completed tests to 80 million cycles at 0.5-in. travel under various load conditions.

Another application for the bearings are in winches and sheaves used aboard large cruising and racing yachts. Here, lubrication can wash out because bearings constantly see fresh or saltwater at temperatures ranging from below freezing to tropical. In this environment, needle bearings tend to bind, while plastic bushings can swell and seize. The Duralon bearings tolerate the harsh conditions and reduce friction.

Self-unloading barges are yet another application for the nonmetallic bearings. The bearings support huge cylinders that position booms as they unload taconite, gravel, calcite, and other bulk mineral cargo. The combined weight of boom and cargo can reach nearly 200 tons.

Lifting and lowering the boom is a hydraulic cylinder mounted above it at the pivot end. The 21-in. bore 125-in. stroke cylinder, weighing more than 22 tons, attaches to the supporting structure by a yoke with a vertical pin. The vertical pin rotates on a Duralon bearing. The bearings see ambient temperatures from over 100°F to under 20°F, plus moisture and dust. The self-lubricating bearings reduce the amount of lubricant needed to prevent corrosion of the large-diameter shafts.

In another application, threesided square Duralon bearings are used in equipment that sprays lubricant on dies between casting cycles. The motor-driven unit moves aside for die removal and replacement. The portion of the machine and manifold supported by the bearings weighs about 500 lb.The previous design used a cam follower on which the upper part of the machine moved. However, the followers needed periodic lubrication. The open-square bearing, in contrast, needs no external lubrication. It rides on a 0.75-in.-square rail that bolts against a plate, which supports the rail along its length.A conveyor system uses hexagonal-shaped, nonmetallic bearings to eliminate a separate drive motor. The precision machines deliver plastic, multiwell vessels, from each of three conveyor lanes, to a multisyringe aspirate-dispense instrument.

A variable-speed dc motor drives the shuttle mechanism though a timing belt and hex shaft. Two 0.375-in. hex-bore Duralon bearings epoxy into a crowned aluminum drive tube. The tube slides along the stainlesssteel hex shaft. Linear travel speeds are about 24 ips. The hex bearings let the shuttle move perpendicular to the conveyor lanes and provide power at any point in its travel, without the weight and complexity of a drive motor on the shuttle itself. Less shuttle inertia shortens transfer times and boosts throughput. The self-lubricating bearing material meets critical outgassing specs as well.

Hydraulic cylinder rod ends are yet another application for the bearings. Here, spherical bearings combine with a splitsteel outer race to eliminate metal-tometal wear and galling. Dynamic load capacities to 30,000 psi are possible. Cylinders equipped with the bearings find use in construction equipment, agricultural vehicles, conveyors, packaging machinery, and scissors lifts. Mounted filament-wound bearings can fit round, square or hex shafts, in either two-bolt and fourbolt flange or pillow-block housings. Housings can be cast iron, stainless steel, or plastic. Various other bearing and ball-joint configurations are possible.

When selecting a self-lubricating bearing material, be sure to look at manufacturer test data and evaluate the material's B10 life. Rexnord has successfully tested Duralon bearings to 25 million cycles at a load of 4,000 psi, and 1,000,000 cycles at 20,000 psi, or about 8 longer than competitor composite bearings.

I want to rebuild my high mileage engine? Does anyone have advice?

GM V6 3.4L 207

is this a good price for a rebuild kit????????

Kit includes: Pistons, Rings, Gaskets, Cam Bearings, Rod Bearings, Main Bearings, Oil Pump, Freeze Plugs, Camshaft, Lifters, Pre-lube, and Timing Set, and Valley Pan (if applicable). Oversizes at no extra cost $535

It doesn't seem like a bad price for the kit but you should research different brands of kit some may have cheap chinese made parts that may be a good value but quality control seems be an issue for some chinese manufacturers. You should also take into account that you will need a cylinder hone an electric drill for the hone a piston ring compressor and technical manuals. To do it right you also need to have the engine block magna fluxed to check for cracks and bearing seats checked for straightness. The heads should also be checked for straightness and cracks, valves seals should be checked and valves should be checked and possibly ground. A machine shop will have to do these checks. I would advise disassembling the engine first and inspecting the cylinder walls for grooves if present the cylinders need to be bored to remove grooves and oversize rings will be needed. Crank shaft and cam shaft bearing seats should also be checked visually for grooves and if present will need to be machined and oversize bearings used.
