Of all the odd names for college football games (or for that matter games of any sport) the coveted Battle of the Milk Can has to be arguably the most bizarre name in existence. In this annual rivalry game played between Boise State University (BSU) and Fresno State University the teams of masculine warriors square off in an epic battle to determine who will have the privilege of hoisting the Milk Can Trophy.
Individuals unfamiliar with the notion of playing a football game for something called the Milk Can Trophy would probably guess that the origins of the name must be rooted in some antiqued terminology native to the area. Much to the surprise of folks educating themselves about the limited history of the Battle of the Milk Can is the fact that the unique title began in 2005. Perhaps something as nonsensical as a battle over a can of milk should not be a complete surprise coming from two universities that are named after nonexistent states. When listing the fifty states in the union neither the state of Boise nor the state of Fresno come up.
It should come as no surprise that dairy farmers are behind the naming of the Milk Can Trophy. The Fresno State Bulldogs are located in Fresno, California and the Boise State Broncos are located in Boise, Idaho. It just so happens that California and Idaho are two of the top five dairy producing states in America at numbers one and four respectively. The Bronco Dairy Boosters give money to Boise State and at the same time another dairy organization called the South Valley Dairy Group gives money to Fresno State. The two men responsible for the unforgettable Battle of the Milk Can game title are Roger Fluegel and Dan Van Grouw who have ties to both the schools and dairy funded booster programs previously mentioned.
In what might come as a surprise to outsiders the concept for a Milk Can Trophy game was an instant hit with fans and the football programs themselves. Unfortunately due to administrative issues the inaugural trophy was not ready in time to be awarded to the winner of the 2005 contest (Fresno won 27-7). Every year the winner of the big game has the privilege of keeping the trophy for a year and has the distinct honor of having their team victory engraved on the trophy for posterity. After five seasons now the Boise State Broncos are off to a commanding three win lead after winning the last four contests since losing the inaugural match up.
Between BSU and Fresno State it is difficult to say who has the more fanatical following. Despite the emergence of the Broncos as a premier college football program every year at the Battle of the Milk Can game it seems that for every Fresno State University blanket sitting on the lap of a fan there is an offsetting Boise State University (BSU) blanket in the crowd canceling out a Bulldogs fan.
Ex-Titans QB Simms pleads not guilty in drugged-driving case
Simms, a former Tennessee Titans backup quarterback who is without an NFL jersey contract, was stopped at a Manhattan police checkpoint July 1. The officer who arrested him testified Thursday that Simms admitted he had taken four puffs of marijuana but there was none left in the car.
Officer Francisco Acosta of the Manhattan South Task force testified, saying he stopped Simms after he made an erratic turn near the checkpoint in his Mercedes Benz sometime after midnight. Acosta said Simms' wife was in the front seat and two men were in the back seat.
Police tested him at the scene for alcohol, and it was negative, but they didn't test him for drugs. Simms was arrested and taken away in a police van while his wife told him to keep quiet, Acosta testified.
Prosecutors played a tape of Simms taken at the police precinct, where the ex-player refused to take a urine test but did an alcohol breath test that came up negative. In the tape, Simms appears lucid but looks tired.
Simms' defense attorneys tried to bring the officer's credibility into question.
The officer testified that when he approached the vehicle, the smell of marijuana was so strong that it made his tongue numb and gave him a headache.
"Does that happen to you often?" defense attorney Harvey Steinberg asked.
Judge Charles Solomon said he'd rule Nov. 19 on whether or not the officer had probable cause to arrest Simms.
Simms told the Tennessean newspaper in August that he "definitely didn't say" he had been smoking marijuana. One of his lawyers has said Simms was talking only about smoking cigarettes.
Simms' lawyers also have said police had no justification for stopping or arresting him, an argument at the crux of Thursday's hearing. Prosecutors say the arrest was lawful.
Simms has started 16 games during his NFL career, with a 7-9 record. A third-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003, he ruptured his spleen during a 2006 game against the Carolina Panthers and had to undergo emergency surgery.
After Tampa Bay released him, Simms went to Tennessee in 2008, played for the Denver Broncos last mlb jerseys year as an unrestricted free agent and returned to the Titans last April.
A judge excused Simms from a court date in August, amid Titans training camp. The team released him Sept. 4.
Simms' father played 14 NFL jersey seasons with the Giants, leading them to two Super Bowl victories. He is an announcer and analyst for CBS Sports.

Jay Cutler ... is that a good move?
So the Denver Broncos selected Jay Cutler as the 11th overall pick in the 2006 Draft. I know he's a great QB, but with Jake Plummer and Bradlee Van Pelt, was it really necessary? Unless of course they are looking to trade one of them.
no i don't think it was necessary Van Pelt is a decent quarterback and he will only get better behind Plummer
