No matter how good of a driver you think you are, brake problems can almost always surface at any time of the year. This can put you at serious risk when behind the wheel. Keep in mind the six most common brake problems found in motor vehicles.
1. ABS brake warning light comes on. This is an indicator that the vehicle's onboard computer has shut off the ABS braking system. If this happens it means a problem was traced. Your brakes will allow you to stop in this event but you will have no more protection against a break or wheel lock-up. This is more of a minor problem which will enable you to get safely to the auto repair shop.
2. The brake warning light goes on. This can be a simple indicator that your emergency brakes are still engaged. If you see that it is still on, release it. On a more serious note, this could also indicate that your brake lubrication and cooling fluids could be dangerously low. Have your fluids checked and re-filled immediately. If your light does not turn off after this, it could mean that there is a leak in one specific part of your braking system. In this event, contact your auto service provider right away.
3. When the brakes lock. This could happen when there is a damaged brake pad, shoe, or perhaps both. It could also be in relation to the disc calipers or wheel bearing functions. In this case you want to get your car towed right away and call for roadside assistance.
4. It is hard to break and your brake pedal will not go down all the way or at all. This problem can be very simple, something could be under your brake pedal. A more complex problem that could cause this is when there is a failed or pinched brake fluid line. Also it could be a failure of the power brake boosting mechanism or both. Again, you want to call for roadside assistance and tow truck if this occurs.
5. The brake pedal feels "mushy" and goes beyond its normal levels. A spongy brake pedal can be the result of too much air in the brake fluid line. A more serious problem could be a break fluid leak or damage to your master brake cylinder. This problem calls for a tow truck as well.
6. The brakes make a squealing noise. This could have many sources. Dirt could be trapped in the wheel. It could also be the result of worn out brake linings, warped or cracked brake shoes, or brake adjusters that are not out of alignment. If you are experiencing a continuous brake squeal it is either because you have wheel bearing damage or your brake pads have far surpassed their replacement point. To prevent permanent brake rotor damage, have this looked at right away.
It's no lie that your brakes are your vehicle's most essential safety system. You should regularly have them inspected and maintain them as best you can. Every repair will save you gas, create a better handling, and give you the feeling of having those brand new BMW Brakes again. These six common problems may not always be avoidable, but they are definitely fixable. When driving always have triple A and roadside assistance in your phonebook, you never know when your brakes might give out.
How To Replace Your Car’S Master Cylinder
A vehicle’s master cylinder is one part of the braking system that should be replaced if it is no longer working properly. If it doesn’t get replaced, the brake system could fail and cause you to lose your brakes, making you fail in trying to stop your care safely. This is where the importance of getting branded auto products comes in, because they are sturdier than cheaper ones and other imitations.
Items needed to replace the master cylinder include a wrench set, a socket, large screwdrivers, pliers, flare nut wrenches, a pair of safety glasses and protect fender covers. Additional items needed are brake fluid, spray penetrating oil and a master cylinder.
The first step to replacing the master cylinder is to put old newspapers underneath the one in your car. Place a guard covers on the fender to avoid brake fluid spilling on it. For good quality workshop equipment, visit a shop that is known to specialize on automotive marketing.
After putting a fender cover, disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder and spray some penetrating oil on the fittings to make it come loose. Flare nut wrenches are essential to prevent stripping of the brake line fittings. Once the lines are removed, tape them to avoid contamination of the lines.
The next step is to remove the mounting nuts or bolts from the firewall, and pulling the master cylinder forward after. Lift it upward away from the mounting bolts to remove it. Install the replacement master cylinder on the car and make sure that the push rod is positioned correctly. Reinstall the master cylinder mounting nuts or bolts and tighten them securely. Reinstall the brake lines to the master cylinder and have someone else depress the brake pedal slowly until the brake fluid sweeps pass the threads of the fitting.
Tighten the line with flare nut wrenches and you’re done!

How do you rebuild the Master Brake Cylinder?
I have a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. My Master Brake Cylinder is going out. I have checked the Auto Wrecking Yards and cannot locate a replacement part. Is there a way to rebuild the one I've got?
There seems to be a difference between "Traction Control" and "Non-Traction Control". How do I tell the difference on my van?
Yes there is only one way to rebuild a master cylinder! It is a simple rebuild. Go to you locate parts house. And pick up a rebuild kit. And a piece of ermine paper. This is to clean the bore. You will need a can of carburetor cleaner. The kit will tell you how is done. Or the part house can print you the details and drawing.

What things have gone wrong with the car? Nearside central locking mechanism never worked. Sunroof seriously leaked after a month or so, soaking me and shorting out the central locking electrics and the internal light.
