Camper Van / Bus
The Split Screen Bus
Split screen buses were first produced in 1949 and continued on for the next 18 years. They were known unimaginably as the Type 2. The first Type 2 was called the Bulli and came in 2 models the Kombi and Panel van. The Microbus was introduced a year later in 1950. Splitties, Type 2, or Split Screen Volkwagen buses came in many guises; barndoor, panel van, kombi, minibus, standard, deluxe, barn door, ambulance, fire van, single cab pickup and double cab pickup, Samba, with various options due to their age such as walk-through, double door, semaphore and safari to name but a few. However it is the Samba model that is the most desirable of all.
The VW Bay Window Camper Van
The VW Bay Window Camper van, still known as a Type 2, was first produced in 1967 and continued being produced in 1979. It was much improved on the split screen, offering a slightly larger body so could carry larger loads, larger and more powerful engines up to a 2 litre model towards the end of production, better electrics, a more refined and comfortable ride. However for many the bay window lacks the original design of the Splittie. It is really the Bay Window bus that really accelerated the use of these unique vans as a mobile home or camper van. These vans were converted by various firms, such as Westfalia (also known as a Westy, Danbury, Devon, Dormobile and Viking. These firms offered different interior configurations for sleeping, cooking and storage as well as differing elevating roof types. These ranged from small staight up vertical pop top roofs to front hinged, rear hinged and side hinged roofs, sleeping between 2 to 7 people!
Volkswagen Beetle / Bug
The Volkswagen Beetle (known unimaginatively as the Type 1 was produced as an economic and robust little car for the people. Ferdinand Porsche was instructed to build a car that was capable of transporting two adults and three children at a speed of 100 km/h. The VW Beetle started production in 1938, finishing a massive 65 years later in 2003. It was designed to be mechanically simple, economical to maintain and robust, with as little to go wrong as possible. This has probably underpins why so many Beetles are still on the road, and why it has its reputation for reliability and sturdiness. Production continued in Mexico until the New Beetle was introduced.
Karmann Ghia
The Karmann Ghia started production in 1955, the results of Volkswagen, Karmann a German coach building company and Ghia, an Italian design company. It was marketed by Volkswagen as a 2%2B2 coupe and convertible and was built using the running gear of the VW Beetle. Although the Karmann Ghia had the looks of a sports car, it never had the power or speed. The Karmann Ghia in both coupe and convertible forms is still a very sought after car and is very desirable. In 1961, VW introduced the Type 34 Karmann Ghia (or Razor Edge Ghia), based on its new Type 3 platform. It featured the new 1500 cc engine and the result was the fastest, most luxurious, and most expensive Volkswagen at the time.

Love for Volkswagen Unite Vw Owners in the Philippines
Vintage cars ageing twenty to forty years old still roam the streets today in the Philippines. And you can see them either restored in their original state, modified or customized. And the possibility that one of them is a Volkswagen is high.
Volkswagen is a German word which means “people’s car” and considered to be a classic car which was conceived in the year 1934 by Adolf Hitler. It was later immortalized by Walt Disney as “Love Bug” named Herbie, the Beetle that has a mind of its own. A series of four films was produced starring the Beetle.
The Philippines is a great market for Volkswagen auto parts like Volkswagen oxygen sensor especially since some of the VW that still roamed the country are old and requires for lots of replacement parts. At present nobody knows how many Volkswagens in the country are still roadworthy. The last Volkswagen sold in the Philippines was in the year 1974, the very same year that Volkswagen People’s Car closed ship that is according to Jesus Layan which was then an inventory staff of the company. The Volkswagen People’s Car was then occupying the building on McArthur Highway in Matina.
The building that used to be a showroom for the remarkable Volkswagen cars is now owned by Davao City Water District. Jesus Layan has also continued giving VW auto services at his Transworld Services shop located at the Buhangin Diversion Road near Green Heights Convention Building.
The Volkswagens roaming the Philippine road comes in variants like the ever popular Beetle, Brasilia, the “Sakbayan” a Filipino buggy version, the rarely seen Karmann Ghia coupe and the Kombi van. There are also some contemporary versions like the Polo, Passat, and the new Beetle.
Volkswagen owners in Davao even formed a “Club Vee Dub Davao” which is an association of VW enthusiasts. The association was founded in 2004 by four avid VW owners namely Michael Angelo Aportadera, owner of a Kombi and two Beetle units and Charles Reginald Reyes, who owns a Herbie look alike complete with racing stripes and the ever popular number 53.
The main objective of the club was to build camaraderie in which members will be ale to share their ideas on how to keep the Volkswagen legacy plus engaged in various VW related projects. The club also has tie-ups with other Volkswagen clubs around the country.
In the year 2006, president Engineer George W. Arquiza who owns 13 Volkswagens has organized Bug Runs which include activities such as motorcades, tree-planting and coastal clean-up, educational trip to the Philippine Eagle Center for the benefit of the Bantay Bata Wards plus some drag racing and slalom.
The new overall president of the association of VW owners in the Philippines is Mr. Ricky Jimenez who is an environment advocate and owned a modified 1981 Beetle. His 2007 agenda include: the registration of the club with SEC, create a committee that will be responsible for various activities such as those pertaining to socials, sports, VW car shows, educational trips, membership recruitment, quarterly publication, races, out of town trips and other pro-environment projects.
Club members are also thinking of creating their very own personalized eco-Tshirts with their car’s picture for design plus some catchy environment-oriented slogans like for example: “This Bug is resistant to aerial or boom spraying. This VW is environment-friendly. It tells the owner to plant trees” and many more.

VW Bug, or VW Karmann Ghia? Or something else...?
I am a 17 year old driver currently trying to find a good, reliable car. I'm interested in learning to work on a vehicle myself, therefore I've been looking into older cars without any over-complicated parts such as ECU's. I've been taking interest in older VW's lately, particularly the 1970's Beetle and Karmann Ghia's, due to the simpler air cooled engine (and also the stylish appearance
). Price is not an issue, however I was wondering which would be more better/reliable?
I just want a vehicle that, over time I can actually make mine and not have to rely on mechanics and such to care for my vehicle.
Also, does the Karmann Ghia have an AC unit? I can't seem to find anything online about it. All I know is that the Beetles don't.
Answers would be very appreciated
No one loves the air cooled VW's more than me, but I have to tell people this all the time - 70's VW's were never particularly reliable. Beetles were very easy to fix, so that makes up for it, IF you're willing to fix it. Karmann Ghia's are less easy to fix, and parts are harder to find.
If you're thinking of getting an old Beetle or Karmann Ghia as a daily driver, get two. Get one of each. One will always be broken. As soon as you fix it, the other one will probably break. So, most of the time, you'll have at least one working car.
You'll learn a lot about cars, and have fun fixing them, if you're serious about making them a daily driver. If you don't have the time and energy to spend a few hours every week repairing your cars, my advice is to avoid old VW's.
