The Savannah Way route is along the Australian Highway. Taking a self-drive tour of the Savannah Way involves covering the whole of Northern Australia, from Cairns in the North of the state of Queensland, via Booroloola and Katherine in the Northern Territory, to the historic town of Broome in Western Australia.
You'll experience an alluring and diverse landscape of wide flat horizons, unique rock formations, gorges and hot springs, and the exquisite flora and fauna of the region. It's important to do some background research before undertaking the route, as some sections may require a four-wheel drive.
The best time of the year to travel the Savannah Way is during the dry season, between April and September. Summer, from December to March is a better time to do the drive if you are interested in the flora of the area.
You will experience the beauty of the flora, lush green plants, copious bird life and sparkling, flowing rivers. However, if you travel in summer, some of the main routes are closed, due to flooding and impassable routes, so it's necessary to plan your journey well in advance of your tackling the route, if travelling at this time.
The Savannah Way Route...
The starting point is Cairns. In Cairns itself, you can spend a bit of time at the Gateway Discovery Centre, and learn all there is to know about the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef in the world, and the World Heritage Rainforest that is a protected and listed territory.
From Cairns follow the Australian Highway 1. Along the section of the route that takes you from Queensland to Hells Gate you'll see the wonder of the Atherton Tablelands as you drive across the Savannah Woodlands. This area is known as the Queensland Gulf and there's plenty to do and see here.
Why not rejuvenate your senses before the next stage of the journey at the exotic Innot Hot Springs and marvel at the unique rock formations of Cobbold Gorge and Undara Lava Tubes.
The next stage of your travel itinerary will take you from Hell's Gate to Borroloola. Located along the banks of the McArthur River, Borroloola is a perfect place to relax and do some fishing. The Borroloola Museum is well worth a visit too, and gives you an insight into the varied history of the area, and the settlers and natives who once controlled these lands.
Fancy a boat trip? You can also hire a boat from King Ash Bay to do some fishing, and also to explore the quaint Sir Edward Pellew Islands.
From Borroloola, follow the road to Roper Bar. A popular attraction along the way is the Caranbirini Nature Reserve. You can learn about Aboriginal culture and art, as well as catching a glimpse of some of the area's endangered species.
Also situated in the Gulf Country is Cape Crawford, often referred to as ''The Lost City''. This is an astounding area of tall and imposing sandstone rock formations in the desert.
Roper Bar is a place where you can relax, refuel and stock up on any provisions. You can also try a spot of fishing to add to your food supplies!
The next stage of the Savannah Way, along Highway 1, will take you to Mataranka. There's a Nature Reserve at Mataranka, with thermal springs where you can rejuvenate before the next leg of the journey!
From Mataranka, you can take the more direct route to the town of Katherine, travelling west along Victoria Highway. In the Katherine region, you can visit the scenic Nitmiluk National Park, and enjoy some watersports in the area. You could also travel east to Daly Waters, and onto Gregory National Park. The main entrance to the park is located along the Victoria Highway.
Gregory National Park encompasses a huge area of around 13,000 sq km, and covers both tropical and desert areas. It's well worth visiting, you can see the strange and beautiful karst rock landscapes, similar to the Burren in Ireland, and learn about Aboriginal culture and the wave of European colonisation and exploration.
An alternative route to the park from Katherine is via Timber Creek. At Timber Creek you can replenish supplies and fish from the Victoria River.
The next stage of this epic adventure drive takes you from Timber Creek to Kununurra. A trip to the Keep River National Park, on the border with Western Australia, is also well worthwhile.
As you travel into Western Australia, in the East Kimberley region, you'll come to Kununurra. There's plenty to see in this charming area and some of the must visits are the wonderful Lake Argyle and the World Heritage Listed Sandstone Beehive Huts, locally known as the Bungle Bungles!
The final stretch of the Savannah Way takes you from Kununurra to the picturesque town of Broome. The Kimberley Region has quite a rugged terrain, and due care is needed on these roads.
The white sandy beaches of Broome at Cable Beach are a welcome place to relax after an epic journey crossing the Northern Territory into Western Australia. Broome is a town that is steeped in history, and was a major centre for the production of pearls in the past.

The Two-Valve Twist: Installing Trick Flow Twisted Wedge® 185 Cylinder Heads
Owners of Ford 4.6L and 5.4L Two-Valve modular V8s, your wait for a true performance cylinder head is over. Actually, it's been over since 2009—that's when Trick Flow Specialties introduced the Twisted Wedge 185 aluminum cylinder heads. They are the first (and so far, the only) true aftermarket performance heads for the Two-Valvers.
Why did it take this long to make a cylinder head for an engine that's been around almost 20 years? We think the timing is just about right. For example, there are gazillions of Two-Valve engines available for cheap in the nation's boneyards. The short blocks can handle up to HOW MUCH HORSEPOWER? with no modifications. Camshafts, induction systems, headers, superchargers, and other hop-up parts are on the shelves. Add in the airflow provided by the Trick Flow heads and you have the perfect storm of serious Two-Valve horsepower.
The Return of the Twisted Wedge
The Twisted Wedge name was first used for Trick Flow's groundbreaking 5.0L aluminum heads, introduced in 1995. (Those heads are still available in myriad versions for street and drag racing). It describes Trick Flow's patented combustion chamber design, which rotates, or twists, the intake and exhaust valve angles and moves the spark plug closer to the center of the cylinder bore. These changes unshroud the valves to increase airflow volume, and help promote more complete combustion.
Trick Flow took a similar approach with the Twisted Wedge 185 heads. Ford's design put the valves single-file on the exhaust side of the head, which greatly restricts airflow. This design also limits camshaft size due to valve-to-piston clearance with the factory dished pistons. Trick Flow engineers moved the intake valves to the opposite (intake) side of the head. This put them directly in line with the intake ports and created the "twisted" combustion chamber design so conducive to airflow. The design also accommodates wide cams up to 245 degrees duration @ .050 and .600 inches of lift with wide lobe separation angles (LSA), and mid- 230 degree duration cams with narrower LSAs. That is a significant improvement over the stock 4.6L heads.
The Twisted Wedge 185 heads retain the port shapes and locations of the factory Power Improvement (PI) heads, so PI-compatible intakes and headers can be used. However, Trick Flow opened up the intake runners to 185cc and recontoured them to smooth out the airflow path. The intake and the 93cc exhaust runners are as-cast, but are based on CNC-ported profiles. These "Fast-As-Cast" runners provide high flow rates without the expense of actual CNC-porting. The process is a Trick Flow exclusive.
The Twisted Wedge 185 heads have another "why didn't we think of that" feature: removable cam bearing journals. Factory 4.6L heads have cast-in journals with a removable cap (Windsor) or a removable cap "girdle" (Romeo). The cams ride directly on the journals. If the valvetrain lets go and the journals are damaged, the heads turn into aluminum doorstops. Trick Flow developed a forged powdered metal, four-bolt cam journal precisely located on the head and completely removable. If the caps are ever damaged, you can ring up Trick Flow for a set of replacements and put your Twisted Wedge heads back into service.
The Twisted Wedge 185 heads are available with your choice of 38cc or 44cc CNC-profiled combustion chambers with 1.840/1.450 inch stainless valves. The 38cc chambers yield about 10:1 compression on a PI short block; the 44cc chambers deliver the same compression ratio for non-PI (1996-98) short blocks.
The heads come fully assembled with stainless valves, 1.100 inch beehive valve springs, chromemoly retainers, and forged steel locks. The standard Twisted Wedge 185 heads come with springs rated at 90 lbs. seatd/205 lbs. open pressure. The springs can handle up to .600 inches of valve lift. Trick Flow also offers the Twisted Wedge Track Heat 185 with stiffer springs (125 lbs. seat/275 lbs. open pressure) for engines with higher compression or a power adder like nitrous and superchargers.
To demonstrate the horsepower awesomeness designed into the Twisted Wedge 185 heads, Trick Flow bolted a pair on a 50,000 mile Two-Valver from a 2002 Mustang GT. To take advantage of the extra airflow, Trick Flow also added one of its Track Max Stage One cam sets, a Track Heat intake manifold, 30 lb.-hr. TFX fuel injectors, an SFI-approved harmonic damper, and a timing chain kit with adjustable crank gears. The net worth of all this stuff is around 408 horsepower—over 100 horsepower more than a stock 4.6L Two-Valve delivers.
That's a big checkmark in the win column.

How much Hp can a stock 04 GTO handle?
I have a 04 GTO and I'm having installed a new Comp cam, heads, intake manifold, headers, beehive valve spring kit, and fully tuned. My worries is that my stock transmission and drive shaft won't handle it. Does anyone know how much Hp the car can handle before breaking?
After 600 hp you will need a stronger drive shaft and a hardrop differential carrier. You will have problems with putting the power to the ground and may need wider fenders for wider rims and bigger tires. Automatic trans will also suffer. Manual trans is rated for over 600hp. It is used in Viper and Cobra cars. 800 to 1,000 hp the modifications would be a whole lot more money
