if you do not know what you are doing ,it can cause all kinds of bad things to you engine , take it to a qualified subaru dealer and let them replace the timing belt for you it is not an easy job for the untrained mech. , also while you have it there have them check for leaking headgaskets (should be under warr. ) then if it needs the headgaskets replaced they will put on a new timing belt and only charge you for the belt no labor for it.
there all several timing marks on this engine and a hyd. belt tensioner , on the belt itself there are 3 timing marks one for crank two for cams and a directional arrow to be put on so that you can read it.
if not done properly you can bend valves and maybe break valve guides,and/or poke holes in the pistons.
