Featured Article :

This article will talk about how to visualize and altar the space between your home and the street.
I was just taking some pictures of what people have done to their front "lawns", a difficult area to deal with. We usually see a rectangle, with a driveway on one side, sometimes a lot of concrete. Somewhere is a straight sidewalk to the front door, off the driveway. The landscaping consists of a few trimmed bushes along the foundation, with grass, mulch, or stone on the ground surface. There might be a tree plopped in somewhere, or they might have added a stone or two or some small element somewhere. The bushes, if trimmed, have hard edges like the house and driveway. There might be a few smaller plants here or there, usually ill-kept.
This kind of landscaping is flat, uninviting, and totally lacking in imagination, alas. It only attempts to hide the foundation. It is bare budget. I have a problem here, because my mind looks for stimulation, for mystery, for something to ponder over. I want to be drawn to something that makes my imagination fly! I am a visual junky, a view-o-maniac! I find flat, empty surfaces boring, just like I find houses with no architectural detail totally uninteresting. I love the "Wow, look at that interesting detail!" experience.
So what can we do to make this front space interesting and inviting? First of all, observe other front "lawns". Which ones have some mystery, and why? What did they do that draws your eye to the space, that makes you feel invited? How did they soften the hard elements? Have they used both Yin and Yang - hard/soft, male/female, straight/curved? (Even if you want a formal, squared, straight line space, there can be room for circles and ovals.) How have they used height, light, shadows, hard and soft elements? What effect do the plantings have?
If you see something and have to ask yourself "what is that for?", then there is a stop to your visual journey around the space. I see that a lot - some element that has no connection to anything else. It is just stuck there, dangling oddly. It confuses the eye. Or a few plants or trees loosely planted in lines, equally spaced. Why, I ask?
Since a lot of front lawns are not big enough to actually walk through physically, except to get to the entrance, they simply serve as something to be viewed from the street, like a photograph. What you add provides the visual transition from flat surface (road and front lawn) to vertical elements (walls and fences). If you have some natural level changes, you are in luck! Flat surfaces are harder to work with.
Here are some steps to follow:
* Plan a visual journey. Where do you want to lead the eye? What is your focal point - the front door, a fountain, a plant, a bench, a sculpture? What is the planned journey into your space, visually and physically?
* Soften hard elements. Plants do wonderfully. Stones, walls, walkways are hard elements which need something to soften them.
* Use curved lines to counteract the straight lines of concrete, walls, and fences. Yin and Yang. All one or the other is unbalanced.
* Pay attention to height. Use short, medium, and tall elements and plants.
* Create mystery. Hide something so the eye wants to go into the space and figure it out.
* Use a few elements, not a bunch. Don't confuse the eye with too much business. Less is more!
* Sit across the street and take the time to look and imagine. What do you want to see? Stark or Interesting?
* And when you plan your plantings, remember that 3, 5, 7, etc. is better than 2, 4 of anything. A particular specimen you want to highlight is fine, but don't just do 1's of everything. Never do 2's and 4's unless you are totally into symmetry. And be careful with symmetry, it can be nice, and boring if not planned well.
* Consider getting rid of some or all of that grass, unless you have a huge space. Plant flowers, add an arch with a rose bush, make it inviting. And throw away those cute little things that belong inside. They confuse!
* Create a room, or rooms outside, just like inside. Through each inside room you have a way to move through it. Do the same outside. Don't junk it up!
Stimulating our imaginations is a big part of the design trick! Work to create the illusion that there is more to see, somewhere to go. Observe other landscapes, observe nature. Walk along a stream, see how it happens naturally and imitate that. Then you can create an interesting front "lawn" space.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association or SEMA exhibition throughout its history has been held during the first week of November and on a Tuesday. However, last year's show (SEMA Show 2007) was held from October 30-November 2, 2007. However, the exhibition is NOT open to general public!
Just like the previous years, the 2007 exhibition was a grand success. The SEMA Show 2007 attracted about 60,000 domestic and international buyers for exhibits organized in ten categories. Sky-high sandwiches
It will never make the Michelin Guide, but New York City's newest restaurant is almost certainly one of the world's most exclusive. Most of the patrons are drawn from an elite group of high-beam artists, namely ironworkers laboring hundreds of feet above the street. The dress code is severe: hard hat, overalls, safety vest and glasses. Security clearance and a union card are a must.
