I want to clean my engine with Brake Cleaner, what should I avoid?
I have a nasty oil leak that is all around the valve cover gasket, exhaust manifold, all over the head, transmission, and the oil pan has just been covered with oil/dirt, etc. The entire block is made out of aluminum.
I have a ton of rags and alot of time to do this, but I don't want to screw anything up with the brake cleaner. Is

brake cleaner is pretty aggresive stuff- Getting the oil and dirt off...you'd be better to use a spray bottle of laundry detergent(tide seems to be the best) mixed 50/50 with water, and really hot water (like a pressure washer). It'll cut the oil and grease as good as anything else. Simple Green(straight, not diluted) works pretty good for this also. Brake cleaner can be bad for any rubber hoses, as it tends to dry up whatever it's been put on, which, if the hoses are older, could make them crack. I'm not sure what it'll do to your gaskets, depends mostly on what material they're made of. Most gaskets won't be affected by this, because they're sandwiched tightly between two chunks of metal. Brake cleaner could also discolor any plastic covers or guards, or any painted surface it touches. I used a really strong engine cleaner once to remove some grease off of a piece of heavy equipment and it totally dulled the paint-made it oxydize almost instantly....brake cleaner could do the same.
Have you tried snugging the bolts on your valve cover? If the engine has been worked on and no locktite was put back on the bolts they may have backed off a touch. That may slow down your oil leak.
